Reference Requirements
You can submit your application irrespective of the fact if your referees have completed the online reference form or not, as the submission does not impede referees access to the application.

Referees must submit their online references by latest 14 December 2011, 23:59 CET (GMT +1). We strongly suggest that you complete the ‘general info’ and ‘references’ part of the online application first in order to give your referees enough time to complete the reference online. Furthermore please make sure to contact your referees before completing this part in order to find out if they are available and willing to provide a reference. It is your responsibility to ensure that references reach us on time.

As stated within the online application form we only accept references provided through institutional email accounts.

Only in cases where the referee does not have one i.e. only holds a ‘hotmail’, ‘gmail’ etc. account, we ask you to:

Complete the form with the available email address.
Inform your referee NOT to complete the online form.
Ask your referee to send a reference letter on institutional headed paper as a PDF document to predocs@embl.de as well as sending it via standard mail to EMBL, Graduate Office, Meyerhofstr. 1, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany

How to apply

The application for the 2012 Spring Selection is open. This is the main selection round for the EMBL International PhD Programme at the EBI.

Available projects
A variety of backgrounds – such as biology, chemistry, computational science, mathematics and statistics – are relevant to PhD projects at the EBI. As well as purely computational projects, there may also be possibilities to incorporate some experimental biology in collaborating laboratories.

Application process
Admission is competitive. All applications are evaluated solely on the basis of qualification and scientific potential.
The online application is now open! Click here to access the online application form.

The first assessment is carried out by a faculty member who is familiar with the applicant’s national education system.

The application is then reviewed by the faculty members of the EMBL Scientific Programme at the EBI.

The EMBL Graduate Committee short-lists the candidates who will be invited to interview.

Short-listed applicants are invited to attend an Initial Admission Assessment (IAA) interview, conducted by a panel of EMBL faculty members at EMBL-EBI. This 15-minute pass/fail interview is the prerequisite for eligibility. During the interview, you may be questioned on any aspect of molecular biology and your previous training.

The days following the IAA are filled with panel and one-to-one interviews with Group Leaders as well as group visits.

Successful candidates are then awarded entry into the EMBL International PhD Programme by the Graduate Committee.

You might also find it useful to take a look at the EBI predoc pages for a guide to the interview process from people who’ve experienced it first hand.

Eligibility and funding

Students are selected from amongst highly qualified applicants from all the EMBL member states by a committee representing all of EMBL’s research units. External fellowships fund a smaller number of non-member state nationals.
For details of prerequisite national degree qualifications, please see the Graduate Office’s Admissions page.
EMBL internal predoctoral fellowships are awarded for 3.5 years, with the possibility of a 6-month extension. The stipend is competitive by international standards and covers subsistence, Cambridge University registration and college fees. Current fellowship rates can be viewed here.

Post-offer application to the University of Cambridge

Once accepted in to the EMBL International PhD Programme, EBI-bound students should register with the University of Cambridge and apply to a college. The EBI PhD programme is currently included in the University’s Graduate Studies prospectus under molecular biology.
Details of individual colleges can be found on the University’s website and additional information is also provided on the EBI predoc pages.
