Responsibilities For PhD Student Position

As a PhD student you will participate in a project entitled ‘Individual variation in the processes of scientific discovery learning in kindergarten’.
In scientific discovery learning, children move from intuitive, implicit, context-bound domain-specific knowledge representations as initial state towards formal, explicit, context-free, domain-general knowledge representations.

In order to gain a better understanding of children's development of scientific representations, it is important to identify the basic principles in representational development across scientific domains in individual children and the factors explaining individual differences between children.

The aim of this PhD Student Position project is to uncover individual variation in the processes involved in scientific discovery in kindergarten with a view to optimization. In a two-year longitudinal study, children's scientific discoveries will be evaluated by focusing on their redescription of representations from implicit to explicit in relation to their motivations and cognitive and linguistic skills. To optimize the processes in scientific discovery, a scientific discovery intervention programme will be implemented in kindergarten classrooms, in which the emphasis will be on redescription of scientific representations with teacher feedback.
