Public Health Internship Program from HENRI

The HENRI Internship program in Public Health for Indonesian

Higher Education Network Ring Initiative (HENRI) is a collaboration between The Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH), the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Regional Center for Food and Nutrition (SEAMEO RECFON) and the University of Indonesia, Andalas University (UNAND), the University of Mataram (UNRAM) and Summit Institute of Development (SID), and Helen Keller International (HKI). The Initiative is supported by funds from USAID-Indonesia and contributions from the collaborating institutions.  HENRI intends to foster a cadre of Indonesian scientists and public  health professionals engaged in the analysis and use of country level data for decisionmaking, program impact assessment and health policy. As an initial step HENRI Internship program in Public Health has created a national level integrated database of household health and nutrition data from 1994 to 2007 containing approximately 1 million household records, and seeks to enhance utilization of this data to address core issues in public health, and to support students and professionals in data analysis, interpretation and  publication. HENRI Internship program in Public Health therefore intends to award 6 internships in Public Health to support analysis and publication of findings from the HENRI database either alone or in combination with other data. Interns will be expected to work in conjunction with an academic mentor provided by HENRI and complete analysis and preparation of a manuscript for publication in an international peer reviewed journal of Public Health, or as a health policy brief. Examples of analysis topics include but are not limited to issues of equity, spatial and temporal trends of Public Health indicators, factors influencing Public Health outcomes, and program impact and modifying factors. Successful applicants should demonstrate a clear ability to conceptualize a core question, utilize HENRI and other data to answer that question via data analysis, and to publish the findings thereby contributing to knowledge and practice of public health and nutrition.

Interns of Public Health will reside in Jakarta and attend short courses at SEAMEO RECFON, and carry out analyses and writing. The internship of Public Health will be held for a 3 month period between February 2012 and January 2013 which will be agreed upon by the intern and the advisor(s).
